Frame & Print Size Guide

All Skylit Studio frame sizes refer to the inner opening where your print sits. A 30 × 40 cm frame fits a 30 × 40 cm Skylit Studio print – simple and true to size.

1. Our Standard Print & Frame Sizes

These are the core sizes we use across our Star Maps, Moon Maps and Space Prints. Each size below is listed in Height × Width (portrait orientation).

Print / Frame Size Height Width
A4 29.7 cm 21 cm
30 × 40 cm 40 cm 30 cm
40 × 50 cm 50 cm 40 cm
50 × 70 cm 70 cm 50 cm
60 × 80 cm 80 cm 60 cm
Turn any frame sideways for landscape – the measurements simply invert to Width × Height.

2. How We Measure Standing & Wall Frames

Whether your frame stands on a shelf or hangs on the wall, we always measure from the inside edge of the frame – the area that actually holds your artwork.

Strut Back Frame (Standing)
Diagram showing how a strut-back standing frame is measured from the inner opening.
  • Ideal for A4 and smaller prints on desks, shelves or side tables.
  • Size is taken from the inner opening, not the outer edge.
  • Your print should match the listed size exactly.
Plain Back Frame (Wall Hanging)
Diagram showing how a plain-back wall frame is measured from the inner opening.
  • Used for our larger wall-mounted Star Maps and space prints.
  • Measured exactly the same way as strut back frames.
  • Again, the print size = the frame's inner opening.

Tip: if you're measuring a frame you already own, measure the visible window or backing board. This tells you which Skylit Studio print size to choose.

3. Moulding Profile & Real Measurements

Each Skylit Studio frame has a flat, smooth woodgrain profile with a generous front face. The diagram below shows the side view of the moulding:

Moulding Diagram
Diagram labelling moulding depth, rebate depth, rebate width and moulding width (front).
  • Moulding Depth: how far the frame projects from the wall.
  • Rebate Depth: how deep the print and backing sit inside the frame.
  • Rebate Width: the lip that overlaps the edge of the print.
  • Moulding Width (Front): the visible face of the frame around your artwork.
Frame Finish / Size Moulding Depth Rebate Depth Face Width Profile
Black, White, Light Oak (A4–50 × 70 cm) 15 mm (1.5 cm) 9 mm (0.9 cm) 30 mm (3.0 cm) Flat, woodgrain smooth
60 × 80 cm only 15 mm (1.5 cm) 8 mm (0.8 cm) 39 mm (3.9 cm) Flat, woodgrain smooth

Our larger 60 × 80 cm frames use a slightly wider face to give big Star Maps and space prints extra presence on the wall.

4. Estimate the Overall Frame Size

Use this quick calculator to estimate the outside dimensions of your frame. For most Skylit Studio frames (A4–50 × 70 cm), the face width B = 3.0 cm. For our 60 × 80 cm Classic Black frame, use 3.9 cm.

Overall frame size: A4 with 3.0 cm moulding ≈ 35.7 cm × 27.0 cm

Formula: Outer height = inner height + (B × 2) | Outer width = inner width + (B × 2)
For precise planning, always allow a few millimetres tolerance.
