Earth on the Horizon: Apollo 11 Looks Home

In July 1969, while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin prepared to land, the command module Columbia circled the Moon with Michael Collins aboard. From that orbit the crew photographed the Earth rising above the lunar surface, the frame NASA catalogues as AS11-44-6552.
The foreground is the cratered far side and the edge of Mare Smythii, the Sea of Smyth, near the Moon's eastern limb. Above it the Earth shows a crescent of day: the Pacific, cloud bands and the terminator line where night begins. Nothing in the picture is the size we expect it to be.
Apollo 11 was the first landing, and every frame from that flight carries its weight, but this one is quieter than the flag and the footprints. It is the view the crew had of everyone they had left behind.
Printed on 260gsm photo lustre paper and framed in the UK by Skylit Studio, from NASA's scan of the original Hasselblad transparency.

Frequently asked questions

What Are The Deep Space Prints?

The Deep Space Collection is our curated selection of the most extraordinary real images of the universe, printed at museum grade. They come from three sources: NASA's James Webb Space Telescope, seeing the infrared universe through dust that hides it from every other telescope; the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, whose thirty-five years of visible-light images include the Orion Nebula, the Pillars of Creation and the Bubble Nebula; and the Apollo missions, whose astronauts photographed the Earth from the Moon and on the way there: Earthrise, The Blue Marble, Earth on the Horizon.

Unlike our personalised star and moon maps that mark life's special milestones, this collection zooms out, showing stellar nurseries, dying stars, galaxies in motion and our own planet seen from a quarter of a million miles away.

Each print reveals:

  • Stellar nurseries where stars are actively forming
  • Planetary nebulae and the spectacular aftermath of dying stars
  • Star clusters and galaxies in motion, merging and evolving across time
  • The Earth as only twenty-four people have ever seen it with their own eyes

Every image is the real observation, processed by the NASA, ESA and STScI teams credited on each product page; Skylit Studio adapts the crop for print and never repaints the science. Where a telescope's colours represent light beyond human sight, the product page says so.

✨ Printed with professional LUCIA PRO II pigment inks on 260gsm Photo Lustre Paper, these gallery-quality prints match the exceptional finish of our star maps.
