Pismis 24: A Stellar Nursery in the Lobster Nebula

This radiant Webb image reveals Pismis 24, an energetic cluster of newly formed stars located at the heart of the Lobster Nebula (NGC 6357), around 5,500 light-years away in Scorpius. One of the Milky Way’s closest sites of massive star birth, this region allows astronomers to observe the formation of some of the galaxy’s heaviest, brightest stars.
The towering β€œmountains” in the scene are not rock but vast, sculpted walls of gas and dust, carved away by intense ultraviolet radiation and powerful stellar winds. Webb’s NIRCam reveals the dramatic interaction between these newly formed stars and the material from which they were bornβ€”illuminated clouds, evaporating ridges, and turbulent flows shaped by extreme energy.
Some stars in Pismis 24 are among the most massive known, with masses exceeding 100 times that of the Sun. Their radiation ionises the nebula, creating the glowing, sculpted structures visible here. The bright stellar field above the dust ridge reveals dozens of young hot stars in early stages of evolution.
Webb captured this region using several infrared wavelengths, including 0.9 ΞΌm, 1.87 ΞΌm, 2.0 ΞΌm, 3.35 ΞΌm (PAH emission), and 4.7 ΞΌm (molecular hydrogen). These wavelengths pierce deeply into dusty star-forming clouds, revealing structures and processes invisible to optical telescopes.

Science Highlights

  • Pismis 24 sits within an active H II region rich in newborn stars.
  • The nebula’s sculpted β€œpeaks” are shaped by intense stellar radiation.
  • Field of view: 4.22 Γ— 5.83 arcminutes (spanning several light-years).
  • Orientation: North is 182.7Β° right of vertical.
Both visually breathtaking and scientifically invaluable, this Webb image offers a rare glimpse into the beautyβ€”and chaosβ€”of star birth on a monumental scale.

Frequently asked questions

What Are The Deep Sky Prints?

The Deep Sky Collection is our curated selection of breathtaking astronomical visuals, drawn from the universe’s most awe-inspiring regions and phenomena. Most of these prints are based on real observations captured by cutting-edge space telescopes like NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, offering an authentic glimpse into the cosmos.

Unlike our personalised star and moon maps that mark life’s special milestones, this collection zooms outβ€”showcasing distant galaxies, stellar nurseries, and cosmic collisions occurring light-years from Earth.

Each print reveals:

  • Stellar nurseries where stars are actively forming
  • Planetary nebulae and the spectacular aftermath of dying stars
  • Galaxies in motionβ€”merging, colliding, and evolving across time
  • Protostellar jets and the raw energy of newborn suns

πŸ–ΌοΈ While most visuals are created directly from infrared and multi-wavelength data, some piecesβ€”like the Planetary Engulfment illustrationβ€”include a subtle degree of artistic interpretation, especially when visualising theoretical cosmic events not directly imaged.

Still, each piece remains grounded in astrophysical reality, informed by NASA data and the latest astronomical research. These are not generic digital recreationsβ€”they are windows into the invisible universe, where light beyond human sight has been translated into colour and form.

Perfect for astronomy lovers, science enthusiasts, and dreamers alike, the Deep Sky prints invite you to bring home a fragment of the infinite. Whether it’s the iconic Pillars of Creation or the dramatic outflows of Herbig-Haro 49/50, each piece tells a story written across space and time.

✨ Printed with professional LUCIA PRO II pigment inks on 260gsm Photo Lustre Paper, these gallery-quality prints match the exceptional finish of our star maps.
