Illuminating the Cosmos Through Visual Storytelling

NGC 604: A Star-Forming Symphony in the Triangulum Galaxy

Located approximately 2.73 million light-years away in the Triangulum Galaxy (M33), NGC 604 stands as one of the largest and most luminous star-forming regions in our local galactic neighbourhood. Captured by the James Webb Space Telescope’s NIRCam, this celestial marvel reveals the breathtaking scale and complexity of cosmic birth on a scale spanning over 1,700 light-years across.
In this image, brilliant stellar winds from hot, young stars have carved dramatic cavities into the surrounding gas and dust. These violent outbursts shape the architecture of the nebula, generating pressure waves that both destroy and trigger further star formation across the region. It’s a galactic symphony of destruction and renewal, conducted by gravity and radiation.
The vibrant orange-red filaments seen here signify the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)—carbon-rich molecules that float through interstellar space. These organic compounds are often linked with the very building blocks of life. Further out, the deeper crimson tones mark cold, dense molecular hydrogen—prime real estate for the next generation of stars to emerge.
Amidst these colourful clouds, Webb’s NIRCam reveals cooler gas illuminated by energetic starlight. The ghostly hues of blue and white represent ionised hydrogen, glowing from ultraviolet light emitted by the youngest, most massive stars. These regions burn with the fierce brightness of formation and are key to understanding stellar evolution across the cosmos.
NGC 604’s proximity and sheer scale offer astronomers a rare chance to study an extreme concentration of newly forming stars in exquisite detail. In contrast to distant, barely resolved nebulae, this galactic nursery is close enough to observe intricate features—twisting gas arcs, radiation-blasted cavities, and sprawling clouds dense with potential for future suns.
The colours in this image are not visible to the naked eye—they’re constructed using multiple filters from Webb’s infrared camera. Each colour represents a different wavelength of light: blue (F090W), cyan (F187N), green (F335M), and red (F444W + F470N). Together, they unveil a previously hidden world of stellar creation in one of the universe’s most captivating galactic nurseries.
Whether displayed in your home or studio, this visual story of NGC 604 offers a humbling reminder of the scale and beauty of our universe. It speaks to the eternal dance of birth and transformation unfolding in silence, light-years away from Earth—and yet, now, within reach through art and science.

Frequently asked questions

What Are The Deep Sky Prints?

The Deep Sky Collection is our curated selection of breathtaking astronomical visuals, drawn from the universe’s most awe-inspiring regions and phenomena. Most of these prints are based on real observations captured by cutting-edge space telescopes like NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, offering an authentic glimpse into the cosmos.

Unlike our personalised star and moon maps that mark life’s special milestones, this collection zooms out—showcasing distant galaxies, stellar nurseries, and cosmic collisions occurring light-years from Earth.

Each print reveals:

  • Stellar nurseries where stars are actively forming
  • Planetary nebulae and the spectacular aftermath of dying stars
  • Galaxies in motion—merging, colliding, and evolving across time
  • Protostellar jets and the raw energy of newborn suns

🖼️ While most visuals are created directly from infrared and multi-wavelength data, some pieces—like the Planetary Engulfment illustration—include a subtle degree of artistic interpretation, especially when visualising theoretical cosmic events not directly imaged.

Still, each piece remains grounded in astrophysical reality, informed by NASA data and the latest astronomical research. These are not generic digital recreations—they are windows into the invisible universe, where light beyond human sight has been translated into colour and form.

Perfect for astronomy lovers, science enthusiasts, and dreamers alike, the Deep Sky prints invite you to bring home a fragment of the infinite. Whether it’s the iconic Pillars of Creation or the dramatic outflows of Herbig-Haro 49/50, each piece tells a story written across space and time.

✨ Printed with professional LUCIA PRO II pigment inks on 260gsm Photo Lustre Paper, these gallery-quality prints match the exceptional finish of our star maps.
