Pluto: The Heart at the Edge of the Solar System

On 14 July 2015, after a journey of nine and a half years and five billion kilometres, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft flew past Pluto and turned a dot in a telescope into a world. This enhanced colour view was taken by the Ralph/MVIC camera a few hours before closest approach, from about 35,000 kilometres out.
The pale heart is Sputnik Planitia, a basin of nitrogen ice a thousand kilometres across that is slowly churning like a lava lamp, with no impact craters at all on its surface. Around it the terrain is old and battered, and the reddish tones are tholins, organic compounds cooked out of methane by sunlight over billions of years.
The colours are exaggerated to bring out the differences in composition and age between regions. Blues and violets mark fresh nitrogen and methane frost; the dark reds of the equator are some of the oldest surfaces in the solar system.
