The Blue Marble: The Whole Earth, Seen Once

On 7 December 1972, about five hours after launch and some 29,000 kilometres from home, the crew of Apollo 17 looked back and took the photograph that became The Blue Marble. It was the last crewed flight to the Moon, and the only time humans have been far enough away, with the Sun behind them, to see the Earth fully lit.
The frame, NASA reference AS17-148-22727, shows Africa and the Arabian Peninsula at the centre, the island of Madagascar, the swirl of a cyclone over the Indian Ocean and, unusually, the whole of Antarctica's ice cap, because the flight happened in southern summer.
It has been called the most reproduced photograph ever made. It appeared on the cover of the Whole Earth Catalog, on flags and in classrooms, and it changed how people thought about the planet: not a map but a single, small, shared place.
This print is made from NASA's scan of the original Hasselblad transparency, cropped to portrait with Earth held in deep space. Printed on 260gsm photo lustre paper and framed in the UK by Skylit Studio.
