The Cosmic Cliffs: Webb's First Look at a Stellar Nursery

On 12 July 2022 the James Webb Space Telescope released its first full-colour images, and this was the one that stopped people. The Cosmic Cliffs are the edge of a cavity in the nebula NGC 3324, at the northern rim of the Carina Nebula, about 7,600 light-years away.
What looks like a mountain range at dusk is a wall of gas and dust; the tallest peaks are about seven light-years high. The cavity above it was hollowed out by ultraviolet light and winds from hot young stars just out of frame, and the steam rising off the ridge is gas boiling away from the cloud's surface.
Webb's NIRCam sees in infrared, which passes through the dust that hides this scene from visible-light telescopes. Hundreds of stars that Hubble could not see appear here, including newborn ones still buried in the cliffs and the jets they fire into space.
