NGC 1333: A Stellar Nursery in the Perseus Molecular Cloud

About 1,000 light-years away, in the constellation Perseus, sits one of the nearest places where stars are being born right now. NGC 1333 is a knot of gas and dust inside the Perseus Molecular Cloud, and the James Webb Space Telescope's NIRCam sees straight through the murk that hides it from ordinary telescopes.
The result is a landscape of colour. Reflection nebulae glow blue and orange where starlight scatters off dust, dark lanes cut across the cloud, and the eight-pointed stars are the brightest young suns, only a few million years old. Between them Webb picks out dozens of brown dwarfs and free-floating planetary-mass objects, too small to ignite as stars.
Jets and outflows from the infant stars punch through the cloud in red and pink, the Herbig-Haro shock fronts that mark where new stars are still gathering material. Astronomers use fields like this one to ask how small an object can form the way a star does.
