The Orion Nebula: Hubble's Sharpest View of a Stellar Nursery

Just below the three stars of Orion's Belt, visible to the naked eye as a faint smudge, lies the Orion Nebula (Messier 42), the closest large star-forming region to Earth. In 2006 NASA's Hubble Space Telescope stitched together 520 separate exposures into this single mosaic, still the sharpest and most complete view of the nebula ever made, revealing more than 3,000 stars of every size cradled in a landscape of glowing gas and dark, sculpted dust.
At the heart of the print blaze the four massive stars of the Trapezium. Their fierce ultraviolet light carves the cavity you see, lights the surrounding hydrogen pink and red, and drives the vast, wind-blown ridges that sweep across the field. The pale green tints trace oxygen, while the deep reds and browns are cooler, dustier gas at the edges of the cloud.
Look closely and the nebula is full of birth. Hubble's Advanced Camera for Surveys picked out dozens of protoplanetary discs, embryonic solar systems silhouetted against the bright background, along with brown dwarfs and infant stars still wrapped in the gas they formed from. Roughly 4.5 billion years ago our own Sun and planets emerged from a cloud very much like this one.
The Orion Nebula lies about 1,350 light-years away in the constellation Orion and spans some 24 light-years across. This print reproduces Hubble's mosaic in museum-grade detail on 260gsm photo lustre paper, printed and carefully framed in the UK by Skylit Studio, so the most famous nursery in the night sky can hang on your wall.
Hubble ACS mosaic released 11 January 2006. Colours combine filters isolating hydrogen, oxygen and starlight, with ground-based data filling the outer edges of the field.
