Rho Ophiuchi: Webb's First Anniversary Portrait of Star Birth

To celebrate its first year of science, the James Webb Space Telescope pointed at the closest star-forming region to Earth: the Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, just 390 light-years away. Because it is so near, this small patch of sky holds no distant galaxies, only the dust, gas and roughly 50 young stars of a single nursery.
The dark cloud at the centre and bottom is dense enough to block even Webb's infrared eyes; the stars forming inside it are still wrapped in their birth cocoons. Around them, the brilliant star S1 at the lower half of the frame has carved a glowing cave out of the dust, and the red jets shooting across the top are molecular hydrogen lit by outflows from newborn stars.
Some of the young stars show tell-tale shadows: disks of gas and dust seen edge-on, the raw material of future planets. Webb's NIRCam resolves them all at a level of detail no telescope had managed before.
It is a picture of a beginning, of the kind of place our own Sun was born in. Printed on 260gsm photo lustre paper and framed in the UK by Skylit Studio.
