Venus: The Surface Beneath the Clouds

No camera can see the surface of Venus; the planet is wrapped in clouds of sulphuric acid 20 kilometres thick. Between 1990 and 1994 NASA's Magellan spacecraft mapped it with radar instead, and this globe, centred on 180° east longitude, is that map wrapped onto a sphere.
The colour is borrowed from the Soviet Venera 13 and 14 landers, the only spacecraft to photograph the surface before they succumbed to the heat, so the oranges and browns are what the rock looks like under the yellow sky. The bright highlands of Aphrodite Terra run across the equator; the dark plains are vast floods of lava.
Venus is Earth's twin in size and almost nothing else. Its surface bakes at 465°C under a pressure ninety times ours, and it turns so slowly that a day there is longer than its year.
