Framed personalised city map print of Paris hanging above a sideboard in a styled living room

Everyone carries a city with them. The one they grew up in, the one they moved to with a suitcase and no plan, the one they walked on a honeymoon and never quite left. Ask someone where they are from and the answer is rarely just a fact: it is a whole feeling folded into a name. A personalised city map print turns that name into something they can hang on the wall, their city, drawn the way they remember it.

This is a buyer's guide to getting that gift right: a print built around a single meaningful place. A home city. A birth city. The one they always come back to. Below: how the map is made, which occasions it suits, and everything you need to know before you order a personalised city map print from Skylit Studio.

Why a City Says So Much

A city is one of the few gifts the person already owns, emotionally, before it arrives. They carry their own version of its streets: the corner shop, the river, the walk to the station, the flat with the crooked window. Framing their city does not introduce something new. It gives shape to something they have carried for years.

That is what separates a personalised print from a generic one. A skyline poster is a nice object. A map centred on their city, chosen because it matters to them, is closer to a letter. It says: I know where you are from, I know it matters, here it is, made to keep.

A skyline poster is a place. A city map centred on theirs is their place.

Skylit Studio

A Map of One City, Chosen by You

Skylit Studio's custom location map is built around any place on Earth you type in. The city is the starting point, but you are never locked to a fixed view. The customiser gives you a free zoom slider, so you decide exactly how much of the place to show. Pull it out for the whole city, its river bends and main roads spreading to the frame's edges, or push in to one neighbourhood, one square, or a single street where a particular door still means something.

On top of that, an optional pin marker can sit anywhere on the map. If the whole city is the point, leave it off and let the streets speak. If one exact spot carries the meaning, the childhood home, the first flat, the cafe on the corner, drop the marker there and the map remembers it.

From there you style it. There are clean, gallery-friendly colourways to match the room, and space for your own text: the city's name, its coordinates, a date, or a short line of your own. Our how it works page walks through the full journey from blank map to finished print.

Cities Worth Framing

The beauty of a city print is how many different moments it can hold. Here are the occasions a city print suits best.

Their Home City

The place that made them. For someone attached to where they grew up, a map of their home city lands hardest. Zoom out for the whole place, or centre on the old neighbourhood.

A Birth City

Where a life, or a child's life, began. A print of the city someone was born in makes a lovely keepsake, especially paired with the birth date in the custom text. If the night itself matters more, a personalised star map of that date is a fine companion piece.

A Favourite City

Not every meaningful city is one they lived in. Sometimes it is the one they fell for on a trip and never stopped talking about: Venice, Lisbon, Kyoto, Edinburgh. If they light up whenever it comes up, that is your answer.

A Honeymoon Destination

For a first-anniversary or paper-anniversary surprise, the city where a couple honeymooned is hard to beat. It sits alongside our other wedding and newlywed gift ideas, a daily reminder of the trip that started their married life.

A University City

The city where someone found their people and became themselves. A graduation or milestone-birthday present built around a university city taps into a specific, fond nostalgia that tends to loom large forever.

A New Chapter, Near or Far

A first flat, a fresh move, a life built far from where it started: each marks a new chapter worth framing. A map of a city someone has just moved to doubles as a warm welcome, while a print of the city an expat left keeps it close.

Make it personal

How to Choose the Zoom Level

Because the zoom is yours, the one decision worth making before you order is how much of the city to show. A quick steer:

  • Zoom out (whole city): best when the place itself is the story. Rivers, coastlines and major roads make a striking, recognisable composition, ideal for home and favourite cities.
  • Middle distance (a district): a good balance of detail and context: the character of one neighbourhood, its streets and green spaces, while the wider city stays legible.
  • Zoom in (a single street): the most intimate choice. One road, a particular junction, the walk they know by heart. Add the optional pin to mark the exact door.

There is no wrong answer, and you can adjust it live until the composition feels right. Big-picture soul? Go wide. Meaning at one address? Go close and drop the marker.

Sizes, Frames and Finishes

Every city map is made to order at Skylit Studio, printed and finished in the UK. You have three formats to choose from, and here is the full range to refer back to.

Sizes run A4, 30x40cm, 40x50cm, 50x70cm and 60x80cm. A larger print naturally carries a wider zoom-out better, since more street detail stays crisp, while A4 suits a focused, single-district or single-street view.

Finishes and prices are the same across the range as our other prints. An unframed print starts at Β£21.99 for A4 and rises with size to Β£69.99 for 60x80cm. A framed print, ready to hang the day it arrives, runs from Β£36.98 for A4 up to Β£119.98 for 60x80cm. A canvas print, boxed and ready to hang with no frame needed, sits between the two, from Β£49.99 for A4 to Β£99.99 for 50x70cm.

Frames. Our premium frames come in Black, White and Natural across every size, with Dark Brown available in A4. Black and White keep things crisp and contemporary, Natural brings a warm Scandi-oak feel, and Dark Brown leans classic. Match the frame to the room the print will live in rather than to the map itself, and it will always look at home.

Where to Hang It

A city map earns its place where people pause. A hallway is a natural fit: a map invites a closer look, and gives people the moment to take one. Above a desk it becomes a daily anchor. In a living room, a larger framed print or a canvas holds its own as a centrepiece, especially a wide zoom-out with strong lines.

On a gallery wall, a city map pairs well with other personal pieces: a star map of a shared date, a second meaningful city, a family print, all sitting comfortably together when the frames stay consistent. For an anniversary display, two cities side by side, hers and his, or then and now, tell a small story on the wall.

Making It a Gift

Half of what makes a personalised print land is the moment it is opened. Adding gift wrapping with a handwritten note turns the reveal into part of the present, and a line explaining why you chose that city often means as much as the print.

Think about the custom text too. The city's name in clean type is timeless. Its coordinates make an understated finish. A date ties the place to a moment, and a short private line, an in-joke only the two of you understand, makes it unmistakably theirs. It need not be much: sometimes the city's name says everything.

Ordering and Delivery

Because each print is made to order, ordering ahead is the safer bet, though turnaround is quick. Orders placed by 3PM on a working day, Monday to Friday, are dispatched the same working day. Canvas prints are the one exception: their stretching and finishing can take up to one extra working day. UK delivery is then via Royal Mail Tracked 48, arriving within 2 to 4 working days after dispatch, fully tracked throughout.

On packaging: framed prints are wrapped and boxed, ready to hang, and canvas arrives boxed too, no frame required. Unframed A4 ships flat in a rigid mailer, while 30x40cm and larger unframed sizes are rolled into a sturdy tube to protect them in transit.

Framed wins on immediacy, hung the day it arrives, while unframed lets your recipient choose their own frame later. Both look beautiful, so it comes down to timing and taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose any city in the world?

Yes. The customiser is built around any place you type in, anywhere on Earth, and the free zoom slider lets you decide how much to show, from the whole city down to a single street. The city on the map can be anywhere in the world.

Does it show my exact street or postcode automatically?

Not by default, and that is deliberate. You control the view: zoom out for the whole city or in to a specific street. If one exact spot carries the meaning, add an optional pin marker to sit on that precise point. You get the level of detail you want, rather than an address printed for you.

What size and finish should I pick?

It depends on the view and the wall. A wide zoom-out of a whole city sings at a larger size where street detail stays crisp, while a focused single-street view works beautifully at A4. Framed arrives ready to hang, canvas gives a gallery finish, and unframed lets your recipient choose their own frame. The full size and price range is in the Sizes, Frames and Finishes section above.

Can I add text or a date to the print?

Yes. Each map has space for custom text: the city name, its coordinates, a date, or a short personal line. It is one of the simplest ways to tie the place to a specific moment.

How is a city map different from a star map?

A city map celebrates a place: the streets, the shape, the spot that matters. A star map celebrates a moment in time, the real night sky over a chosen date and location. Many gift both, one for the where and one for the when.

How quickly will it arrive?

Orders placed by 3PM on a working day are dispatched the same working day, with canvas taking up to one extra working day. UK delivery is via Royal Mail Tracked 48, arriving 2 to 4 working days after dispatch, fully tracked. Order a little ahead to hit a specific date.

Is it a good anniversary gift?

One of the best. A city tied to a couple, a honeymoon destination or where they built a life, makes a heartfelt keepsake. It fits naturally with our anniversary gift ideas, and two cities side by side make a lovely paired display.

Give Them Their City

The best gifts are rarely the flashiest. They are the ones that show you were paying attention, and a personalised city map print does exactly that: it takes a place someone already holds close and gives it a frame, a wall, a permanent home. Their home city. Their birth city. The one they always come back to.

When you are ready, start with the custom location map, type in their city, and find the view that feels like theirs. Not just a map. Their map.
