Moon Phase Prints Explained: Dates, Accuracy and Sizes

A personalised moon phase print shows the Moon exactly as it appeared on a night that matters to you: the shape of its lit side, the way that light was tilted in your sky, and the face of the Moon turned towards Earth at that moment. Getting it right comes down to three inputs (a date, a time and a place) and a few choices about size, frame and style.

What a Moon Phase Print Actually Shows

Every Skylit Studio moon phase print is built from a calculation, not picked from a set of stock moon photos. The Moon is placed and lit according to where it sat relative to the Sun and Earth at your moment, then drawn on a three-dimensional lunar surface so the craters and seas fall where they really were. Beneath it sit your words, the date, the place and its coordinates.

Choosing the Date, Time and Place

The date: birth date, or a night that meant something?

A birth date suits birthdays, new arrivals and milestone gifts, because it is already part of the recipient's story. A meaningful night (the evening you met, the proposal, the wedding) often suits couples better, because it is a Moon they may actually remember seeing. If in doubt, use the date the recipient would write on a card themselves.

The date picker covers any date from the early 1920s to the mid-2030s: far enough back for a grandparent's birth or a 1950s wedding, and far enough forward for a wedding still being planned. One print holds one moment; for several dates, see the family print below.

The time: a small effect on the phase, a bigger one on the tilt

The lit portion changes continuously but not evenly. Around the first and last quarters it grows or shrinks by roughly ten percentage points a day, about half a point an hour. Near full moon it barely moves: the Moon is still around 98 to 99 percent lit a day either side. So even with only a date, the phase on your print will look right.

The time matters more for orientation. The Moon appears to rotate as it crosses the sky, so a crescent leaning one way at dusk can sit almost upright by midnight. Enter the time to the minute if you know it; otherwise the default late-evening time is a sensible stand-in. For moments that ran past midnight, use the date the family actually says out loud.

The place: the phase is shared, the tilt is local

At any instant the Moon shows the same lit fraction to everyone on Earth. What changes with location is how that lit side is turned in your sky: a crescent that opens one way over London opens the other way over Sydney. Enter where the moment happened, not where the gift is going. A proposal in Rome is calculated for Rome, even if the print is posted to Leeds.

Dates near a new or full moon

A date close to new moon gives a mostly dark disc, softly lit by earthshine (sunlight bounced off Earth onto the Moon), perhaps with a fine sliver of light at one edge. It is accurate and can look beautifully understated, but it differs from the bright moons in most product photos, so check the live preview. Near full moon, the "Full Moon" label covers roughly a day and a half around the exact moment of full, so a night slightly either side can still be named full.

How the Moon Phase Is Calculated and Rendered

The Moon takes about 29.53 days to go from one new moon to the next, moving roughly 12 degrees further from the Sun in our sky each day. Each print works out where it was on that cycle at your minute, then how it looked from your place, using algorithms derived from Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms and the IAU model of the Moon's pole:

• Illuminated fraction and phase: how much of the disc was sunlit, from the geometry of the Sun, Earth and Moon.
• Bright limb angle: which edge faced the Sun, so the light falls on the correct side.
• Axis position angle: how the Moon's own north pole was oriented relative to celestial north.
• Parallactic angle: the extra rotation from your latitude, longitude and local time, which makes the tilt match your sky rather than a textbook diagram.
• Libration: the Moon's slow nod and sway, which reveals up to around eight degrees more of one edge or another over a month, so the face on your print is the one turned towards Earth that night.

Those numbers drive the render. The Moon is drawn as a sphere wrapped in detailed lunar surface imagery, with relief mapping for crater depth, and print files use 8K surface textures so the detail holds up at the largest sizes. Sunlight is placed from the computed bright limb angle, with faint earthshine on the dark side, which is why the terminator (the line between lunar day and night) looks soft and cratered rather than drawn with a compass. The printed phase name comes from the same position in the cycle that sets the shape, so label and picture always agree. Design Choices: Astronomy or Style?

None of these choices changes the phase, the tilt or the face of the Moon.

• Moon Hue: Silver (the default), Golden, Blue or Pink. Hue is an artistic interpretation; the phase stays true to your moment.
• Background: solid Black, White, Navy, Cream or Deep Red, or image backgrounds such as Galaxy, Starry and NGC 604.
• Layout: Classic, Boxed, Panel or Header, which change how the Moon and text share the page. Classic also offers an inset border and Moon Data.
• Words: a personal message of up to five lines, plus a caption and the date and place details, with separate font choices for the message and the details.

A useful rule: the more personal the message, the simpler the background. A long message reads best on a solid colour, while a single line can hold its own against a galaxy.

Sizes Compared: Which One Suits Your Wall

The single moon phase print is portrait and comes in five sizes. Here is the full price range in one place.

Every size keeps the same proportions, so going up a size gives a physically larger Moon with more visible surface detail, not more empty space. The real question is how far away it will be seen from.

• A4: for close viewing on a bedside table, desk or shelf, or as one piece in a gallery wall of star and moon prints.
• 30 x 40 cm: the step up to a wall of its own, such as a hallway, bedroom or the space above a desk.
• 40 x 50 cm: a confident living-room piece above a console or sideboard, readable from across the room.
• 50 x 70 cm: a statement size above a bed or sofa, where the Moon becomes the focal point.
• 60 x 80 cm: the largest, for a chimney breast or a big open wall, as a print or framed.

Unframed A4 ships flat in a rigid cardboard mailer; 30 x 40 cm and larger are rolled in a sturdy cardboard tube.
